When Grover and Buddy Miles played together at a the Saddle Creek Bar in Omaha Nebraska, Buddy seemed to have gotten lost in the feel that he was again playing with the legendary Jimi Hendrix. Miles praised Grovers work as a Hendrix impersonator. " He's very close to Jimi in terms of dexterity, vim and vigor" Miles became a part of Hendrix's band of Gypsy in 69'. Preceded by Billy Cox and Mitch Mitchell, who rejoined Jimi at Woodstock 69'
Grover was born to Bertha and
Jimmie Lipkins, Sr. on October 01, 1959 in Omaha, NE.
Both parents are now deceased.
He took interest in the guitar
at a very early age, while watching "Elvis Presley" on television,
while sneaking his brother's
(Grady Lipkins) guitar. Grover got away with this, until he broke
a string on Grady's guitar and
had to confess he had been playing it all along.
Grady replaced the string and
gave him permission to play it, because he saw the potential.
Grady was an avid "Jimi Hendrix"
fan at that time and soon introduce Grover to "Jimi's
music (BAND of GYPSYS) at the
age of 10 years old.
At that age, Grover was amazed
at the sound coming from "Jimi's" guitar.
That following Christmas, Grover's
dad purchased his first guitar, realizing, he didn't want
anything else but that.
Grover began locking himself
in his room everyday, teaching himself how to play the guitar.
He begin listening to his brother's
albums of various artists and learning different guitar
styles, in the R&B, Blues,
Funk, and Rock music.
He then realize "Jimi Hendrix"
was his guitar hero and begin learning his material.
He would practice day and night,
until he felt he got it right.
At the age of 14, he start playing
in all the local clubs in Omaha, leaving the audience amazed
at his ability to play at such
a young age.
Since then he has played in several
different bands, ranging from Solid Funk to Hard Rock &
Roll.
He soon joined the Alexander
Band, which later became "Hit It and Quit with Dr. Spit" a
local Black Rock & Roll
band, which won the local People Choice Award favorite band in the
1980s.
Halloween night, 1993, at McKenna's
Blues, Booze & BBQ club, Grover decided to dress up
like "Jimi Hendrix", after a
stellar performance of playing the "Star Spangle Banner", people
from the audience, suggested
that he should start doing "Jimi Hendrix" as an act.
That's when Grover decided to
form his own band, doing a Tribute to "Jimi".
From then on, fans has been pouring
into nightclubs, just to see him "do his thing" and the
rest is HISTORY.
